About this class
Do you also have this one vase in the closet? Maybe it's an heirloom, a quirky flea market find or a design object that you've never been really happy with before because nothing really fit in?
In this ikebana workshop based on the principles of the Sogetsu School, exactly this vessel is at the center of attention. Instead of using flat bowls, we dedicate ourselves to the challenge of creating an individual, asymmetrical design in the object you have brought along. Together, we analyse the lines of your vase and try out special fastening techniques to firmly fix plant parts even in difficult openings. In the spirit of wabi-sabi, we discover true expressiveness in the authentic nature of things — beyond flawless perfection.
This is what you can expect:
- Interpretation: We analyse the shape and character of your vase together. What does it need to shine properly?
- Pure technology: The biggest hurdle with unusual vases is often the hold. I'll show you special attachment techniques with which we can firmly fix plant parts even in difficult openings or angles.
- Asymmetry and balance: We create an arrangement that takes up the peculiarities of your vase and transforms it into a harmonious, modern Ikebana work of art.
Your preparation:
1. Find the right vase:
Your own vase is highly recommended. However, please consider a few criteria for an optimal result:
- No: The vase must not have a pictorial pattern (e.g. flowers, people, scenes, etc.). It should definitely not be made of transparent glass and should also not be too colorful.
- Yes: Graphic patterns, subtle structures and muted colors are very welcome.
Do you not have a suitable vase but would absolutely like to participate?
No problem Look around at flea markets, at household liquidations or in stores such as Nanu Nana or Thomas Phillips for an inexpensive item with a strong character. Examples of suitable shapes and materials can be found in the attached photos.
2. Finds from nature:
If you are determined to participate, I invite you to go through nature with your eyes open in advance. On your next walk in fields, woods and fields, look for suitable branches or dried wooden objects that could fit in or with your vase. Pay attention to your gut feeling — reach out when something appeals to you, even if your mind might doubt at first.
I'm looking forward to an exciting workshop.
