About this class
During the 4-week pottery course in Nordend in Offenbach, you will dive into the art of handbuilding — working freely with clay. In three consecutive sessions, you use your hands to shape and refine individual ceramic objects such as cups, bowls or small vases. You will learn classic techniques such as pinching, coiling and slab building and have the opportunity to implement very personal designs. The fourth session focuses on glazing: You choose from different colors and make your work shine.
The beautiful, relaxed atmosphere in the small group studio “a pinch of salt” gives you intensive support and creative freedom. The course is ideal for beginners and advanced users — all materials, glazes, tools and both firing processes are included.
What you’ll do in the class
Session 1: Getting started & designing first objects
- Welcome to the studio and introduction to hand building techniques: pinching, coiling, slab building
- Implementation of initial designs — e.g. cups, bowls or decorative objects
- Clay processing and shaping tips
Session 2: Deepen & further shape projects
- Continue working on objects that have already begun or create new pieces
- Focus on details, edging, applying handles or patterns
- Support from course instructors with individual ideas
Session 3: Refine & Prepare for the Brand
- Recent corrections and surface treatment
- Preparation for scrubbing. The pieces must dry for approximately 7 to 10 days before they are put in the oven and fired for the first time. The objects can then be glazed.
Session 4: Glaze in your favorite color
- Introduction to glazing techniques and color selection
- Independent glazing of your dried works
- Subsequent glaze firing at 1240 °C
After firing and slowly cooling down, your finished pieces will be ready for collection approximately 2 weeks later (during our pick up times, Saturdays 1 p.m. — 4 p.m.).
