Personalities and resistance fighters
Learn more about the brave personalities who rebelled against colonial oppression. Get to know Rudolph Manga Bell, who, as king of the douala in Cameroon, opposed the expropriation and violence of the German colonial power and was executed for it.
Discover the story of Anna Mungunda, a heroine of the Namibian resistance, and Cornelius Fredericks, a leader of the Nama people who rose up against cruel German rule in present-day Namibia. We also address the Maji Maji Uprising in East Africa, one of the biggest African resistances against colonial powers.
The African Quarter is not only a place of remembrance, but also a symbol of the continualities of colonial structures in Germany. Our tour takes you to streets and squares that are named after colonial actors and makes you think about the need to rename roads and recognize colonial heritage.
