About this Tour
Discover the untold stories of BiPOC feminist icons who shaped 20th-century Berlin. This guided tour starts in Kleistpark, where You uncover hidden colonial ties of botanical gardens to the 16th-century slave trade and their role in Europe’s so-called "Golden Age." Explore how these spaces reflect intersectional oppression and the resilience of marginalized communities.
Highlights of Your Journey
- Kleistpark & Colonial Botany: Learn how botanical gardens were linked to the transatlantic slave trade and colonial exploitation, and how these histories intersect with feminist and anti-racist movements today.
- Walk in the footsteps of May Ayim and Audre Lorde, two pioneers of Afro-German and Black feminist thought. Discover how their work on intersectionality, identity, and resistance continues to inspire global movements for equality.
- Intersectionality & Religion: Visit the German-American Church and discuss its dual role: as a tool of oppression and a space of healing and Black Joy for Berlin’s Black community.
- Audre Lorde’s Berlin Legacy: Explore how Audre Lorde’s poetry and activism empowered marginalized communities during the Western occupation of Berlin. Visit the graves of Ika Hügel-Marshall and May Ayim, and reflect on their Afro-German identity and contributions to feminist history.
- Racism, Mental Health & Community: End Your tour in Großgörschenstraße, a historic refuge for marginalized communities. Discuss the impact of racism on mental health and the power of collective healing in creating inclusive spaces.
