About this class

Here in the heart of Neukölln, in our club premises, where over 35 analog photographers work, you will experience the entire process of analog photography: After an introduction to camera technology and image design, you will go on a photo walk through the neighborhood with 35mm cameras. You then develop your black and white film yourself in the darkroom, dry and cut it. Finally, you create your own prints under red light and can also digitize your pictures. You take home a contact sheet, three prints and your digitized photos.

What you’ll do in the class

How does the course work?

In eight chapters, you get a complete insight into analog photo practice — from the first contact with the camera to the finished print:

1. Introduction to the world of analog cameras
We discover various cameras from different decades and talk about formats, functions and their special features.

2. Insert film
You will receive a 35mm camera and learn step by step how to insert a film correctly.

3. Understanding camera technology
aperture, shutter speed and exposure are explained in a practical way — so that you can take pictures consciously.

4. Photo walk through the neighborhood
We go out together and implement what we have learned directly. You develop an eye for subjects, light and image composition.

5. Preparing for film development
Back in the laboratory, you will learn about the development processes and practice reeling the film.

6. Film development in the darkroom
The next step is to develop your film yourself — a special moment when the images become visible.

7. Contact sheet & selection
We create contact sheets to view all images and select your favorites.

8. Own prints & digitization
You create two of your own prints in the enlarger. In addition, your entire film will be digitized — you will receive the files a few days after the workshop.

Who is the class suitable for?

The course is suitable for anyone who wants to discover or get back into analog photography — without any previous knowledge.

Have you inherited an old camera and would like to finally understand how it works? Do you want to get away from everyday digital life and take more conscious photos again? Or did you use analog photography before and are looking for a return to work?

Whether you're a beginner or with experience — all you need to bring along is curiosity and interest in photography.
