About this class

Try out the potter's wheel — turning & turning in 2 days

Spend two inspiring days full of creativity and joy and create functional ceramic objects that will be with you for a lifetime.

This course is perfect for you if you want to try out the potter's wheel and learn the process of creating a piece of ceramic — from blank to finished piece. This course is without glazing, but you can choose your favorite colors from 18 glazes at the end

Making pottery on the turntable is both mesmerizing and fascinating — even if the beginning requires some practice, you'll be amazed how a cup or bowl is created from a rotating piece of clay in just a few simple steps.

We teach beginners in small groups in our cozy studio so that everyone gets enough personal support from our teachers. We speak German as a mother tongue and fluent English (C2).

What you’ll do in the class

Day 1 — Turning the disc (3 hours)

  • You learn how to center sound on the turntable
  • You create your first functional objects (e.g. small bowls or cups)
  • You learn how to use wood and metal tools
  • You will learn how to safely remove your works from the turntable
  • You have enough time to shoot approx. 3-4 pieces
  • You get an insight into the origin and nature of clay

Day 2 — Turning off the window (after 7 days, 3 hours)

  • You will learn how to securely reattach your hard-dried leather pieces to the windshield
  • You remove excess clay for an easier, balanced result
  • You process the foot of your vessels so that they are safe and scratch-free
  • You refine details and bring in your individual signature
  • You can add your signature or an engraving if you wish
  • After this introductory course, you can take part in all advanced courses

GLAZE + FINISHING

At the end of the course, you can choose one of your pieces and choose one of 18 glazes suitable for dishes (including white, blue, gray, pink, green, turquoise + 6 effect glazes with color gradients). If you want to keep several pieces, you pay an additional 10 euros per piece for rework and glaze.

After drying for 7 days, we continue to process your selected pieces so that you can use them in everyday life and glaze them in the colors of your choice.

WHEN WILL MY PIECES BE READY?

After a total of 48 hours in the fire at 900°C of scrub firing and 1240°C of glaze firing, your pieces will be transformed into stoneware. The glazes blend with the clay and create a long-lasting, high-quality work of art handmade by you. The entire process, including rework and drying time, up to the finished piece takes around 3-5 weeks.

Your ceramic pieces are then dishwasher-safe and suitable for everyday use—for the rest of your life! Hopefully, the memories of your ceramics course will last just as long.

We'll let you know in person when your items are ready to be picked up. Are you unable to pick up your works in person? We offer DHL shipping for an additional fee of 5.90 euros.

WE'LL SEE YOU AT THE POTTERY WHEEL!

Who is the class suitable for?
