About this Tour
Discover Museum Island Berlin
Overwhelmed by what Museum Island has to offer? This tour is the perfect introduction — for visitors to Berlin as well as for Berliners!
From Germany's first museum building to the spectacular renovations of the post-reunification period: Museum Island is much more than just a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It is a place where history and culture merge in a unique way — and where you also learn a lot about Berlin's city history at the same time.
This tour is for everyone — not just art or museum experts. If you are interested in Berlin, history or simply exciting places, this is the right place for you.
We explore Museum Island mostly outdoors and also visit some entrance areas and courtyards of selected museums. There I will introduce you to the background information about the buildings and collections. If you wish, you can schedule a coffee break in the museum café.
Our tour starts at the entrance to the Bode Museum on the northern tip of Museum Island. From there, it goes past the Pergamon Panorama to the (currently closed) Pergamon Museum — including exciting information about the history and current renovation work. We continue to the Unter den Linden Armoury, the current home of the German Historical Museum. We visit the Neue Wach e and Friedrichswerder Church before we explore the Humboldt Forum — the reconstructed Berlin Palace. The trail then takes us past Berlin Cathedral through the pleasure garden to the Altes Museum, the first museum building in Germany, which was built specifically as such. We end our tour with the Colonnade Courtyard, the Old National Gallery as well as the New Museum and the James Simon Gallery.
In doing so, we take a look at how museums have helped shape cultural and political developments over centuries — and how they were used under various political systems to convey specific views of the world.
Get to know a gem of Berlin: On this tour, you will get to know a piece of Berlin that will be a real addition to your knowledge of the cityscape not only for visitors but also for Berliners.
