Today, we experience Hamburg as a lively and modern city. But how did it become what it is today? What developments led to this impressive metropolis?

To answer these questions, we take a 2-hour journey through the various phases of Hamburg's history.

Fire, Wars, Catastrophes — Change, Growth, Modernity

From the first settlements in Hammaburg, to the heyday of the Hanseatic League, the devastating Great Fire, the era of colonialism and the industrial revolution — we explore how these events shaped the city of Hamburg

How does this activity work?

Our journey takes us from City Hall to Deichstraße, where we discover the oldest traces of the city, marvel at magnificent office buildings from the inside and enjoy the charming flair of the last remnants of the old town.

In addition to architectural highlights and secret tips, we also look at social life over the course of time. How did Hamburgers live in the various epochs?

At the end of our tour, a comprehensive picture of Hamburg's urban development is created from the individual centuries. Near the Elbphilharmonie, we may already be able to guess which direction the future of this city will take.
