About this Tour
City tour through Bremen-Vegesack — Discover the maritime north of the Hanseatic city
Vegesack is one of the most historically important and maritime districts of Bremen — a place where you can impressively experience the history of German shipbuilding, seafaring and Hanseatic merchant tradition. On our exciting city tour through Bremen-Vegesack, you will follow in the footsteps of shipyard founders, Greenland drivers and wealthy citizens of Bremen who built their summer residences here in the 19th century.
The port of Vegesack
As early as the beginning of the 17th century, one of the first artificially created river ports in Germany was built in Vegesack. This historic port laid the foundation for the maritime significance of the town and its surroundings, which at that time did not even belong to Bremen. Even today, you can feel the proximity to the Weser and seafaring on every corner.
Today, the port is the Vegesacker Museumshaven, where historic ships from different periods are anchored. Among others, the BV2 VEGESACK sailing logger, the BREMEN test cruiser and the FRANZIUS, a faithful replica of a Weser barge, are at home here. Please note: It is not guaranteed that all of these ships will be in port at the time of the tour.
The Alte Speicher — a testimony to shipyard culture
Another landmark is the Alte Speicher, which was built around 1814 by shipyard founder Johann Lange. Today, the historic building houses various institutions and companies.
The Utkiek — memories of the whaling season
At the popular Utkiek viewpoint, you'll discover an impressive bronze cast of a whale jaw — a reminder of Greenland drivers who set out from Vegesack to hunt whales in previous centuries. This era has shaped the district as well as its shipyards.
Vegesack City Garden — Botanical Diversity and Historical Roots
Relaxation and history come together in the beautiful Vegesack City Garden, which dates back to the doctor and botanist Wilhelm Albrecht Roth. The spacious park with its partly exotic trees not only offers green oases of peace, but also insights into the history of Vegesack. During the tour, a part of the city garden is visited.
The Weserstraße — Captain's Houses and Merchant Villas
A walk along part of the Weserstraße takes you past magnificent merchant mansions and stylish captain's houses. Wealthy Bremen merchants once resided here, who discovered Vegesack as a summer retreat and built their prestigious houses right on the high banks of the Weser.
Exciting anecdotes and surprising stories
During the city tour, you will learn entertaining and surprising stories — for example, why the donkey of the Bremen Town Musicians is said to have received his bread of mercy in Vegesack of all places. We will also shed light on what supplies seafarers carried with them on their month-long trips and why the idea to found the German Society for the Rescue of Castaways (DGzRS) was born here in Vegesack of all places.
