From chopping boards to furniture: which wood workshops are there?
In every class you take your own finished piece home at the end. These formats are available:
- Chopping boards & kitchen pieces: End-grain chopping boards made from fine woods such as amaranth, zebrano, cherry or maple, plus pepper mills made from solid wood.
- Furniture making & carpentry: Beginner courses teach you to work at the workbench and on machines while you build small furniture such as a rustic stool.
- Carving & sculpture: Carve spoons, figures and wooden sculptures with a mallet, chisels and gouges – as a one-day class or a multi-day sculpture workshop.
- Traditional wood joinery: Specialist classes teach hand-cut dovetails and Japanese sashimono joints.
- Upcycling & restoration: Reclaimed wood becomes something new, for example a stool in the Japanese yakisugi technique, where the surface is deliberately charred.
- Kids & family: Parent-child carpentry classes and a kids' carpentry summer camp in Vienna bring even the youngest to the workbench.
How much do wood workshops cost?
Wood workshops cost between 15,00 € and 750,00 € and usually take about 1 hour to 20 hours, depending on the experience you choose. You'll find all further details directly in the respective event descriptions.

Wood workshop: What you will learn
In a wood workshop you learn the craft step by step: after a safety briefing you cover materials and how to choose the right wood, then you plan your piece, mark out measurements and saw the parts to size. Depending on the class, you plane, sand and drill, glue the parts together or use a mallet and chisel to shape the wood. Finally, you finish the surface by oiling, charring or engraving it. Most classes require no prior experience and are explicitly aimed at beginners – ideal if you're looking for a carpentry class for beginners near you.
A wood workshop as a team event or gift
Working with your hands together builds team spirit: Pfiffiges hosts groups of up to 25 people, Kreativ-Werkstatt-Köln 8 to 15. The choice is especially large in the capital – find more ideas under team events in Berlin. A voucher for a wood class also makes a lovely gift for creative people.
