A homemade flower wreath can quickly turn your home into a real eye-catcher. Especially in spring and summer, when flowers are blooming outside, a flower wreath brings joy. Homemade flower wreaths are completely unique—everyone can add a personal touch to their wreath, for example by choosing the flowers they want to use. If you’d like to design your own flower wreath, you’ve come to the right place!

What do you need to make a flower wreath?
You don’t need many materials to make a flower wreath—in theory, you could make a beautiful wreath with just a little wire and some branches and moss from a nearby forest or park. But today, we want to make a stunning flower wreath for your home.

For your flower wreath, you’ll need the following materials:
A wire ring, a metal ring, or a straw wreath (also known as a straw wreath base) as the foundation for your flower wreath.
- Floral wire: We’ll use the wire to attach the flowers to the base.
- Flower or plant shears: We’ll use these to trim the flowers for the wreath.
- A selection of flowers: Put together beautiful, harmonious flowers for your wreath.
- Branches and greenery: Branches and greenery add texture to the wreath and give it a natural, airy feel.

Which flowers are suitable for a floral wreath?
Since the flowers will no longer be supplied with water once the wreath is assembled, we choose blooms for the wreath that have a low water content even when fresh and dry well. This way, you can enjoy your wreath for a particularly long time.
The following flowers and plants are particularly well-suited for your flower wreath:
Lilies of the valley: Lilies of the valley, which come in various shades, are ideal for your homemade flower wreath. What makes lilies of the valley special is that the flowers retain their vibrant color when dried, making them a stunning focal point in your wreath.
- Thistles: Green and blue thistles are another striking highlight. These so-called composite flowers also retain their color and shape whether fresh or dried.
- Eucalyptus and olive branches: Eucalyptus and olive branches complement your summer wreath with fresh shades of green.
- Lavender, gypsophila, and strawflowers: For another (colorful) highlight, lavender, strawflowers, or gypsophila are excellent choices.
- Hydrangeas: For a touch of elegance, you can also use hydrangea blooms in your floral wreath.

How many flowers do you need for a flower wreath?
We arrange our flower wreath on one side, so the underside of the wreath is free of flowers and plants, and you can also hang the wreath as a door wreath or decoration on a room wall. For a homemade flower wreath on a wire or metal ring with a diameter of 25–30 centimeters, we use six to eight stems of eucalyptus or ten to 15 stems of olive as a filling “base.” You then add four to six stems of beach lavender, two to three stems of gypsophila, three to four stems of thistle, and, if desired, two to three hydrangea blooms or a few blooms from the strawflower. If you’re making your wreath on a straw base, plan to use double the amount of all materials for your flower wreath.
Step-by-Step Guide: How Do I Make a Flower Wreath?
- Preparing the Wreath: Gather all the materials you’ll need for your flower wreath. To begin, wrap the wire around your wire ring, metal ring, or straw wreath two or three times, then twist the end of the wire around the spool. This ensures that the wire doesn’t come loose while you’re making the wreath. Keep the wire on the spool the entire time; you’ll only cut it off at the end, once your flower wreath is finished.
- Now comes the creative part of your project: Assemble small mini-bouquets, which will gradually form your wreath. It’s best to start with two short eucalyptus or olive branches, about seven to ten centimeters long, and place them directly where you just secured the wire. Now secure the ends of the bouquet by wrapping the wire around the ring once or twice. Then take the next small bouquet and place the top half of it on top of the end of the first bouquet you just secured. Secure it again with one or two wraps of wire, and then add the next small bouquet. This ensures that the ends of your mini bouquets are hidden, creating a beautiful, uniform look.
- Finishing the flower wreath: When you’ve come full circle, it’s important to secure the end of your wire again, just as you did at the beginning, so that your wreath is stable and retains its shape. For the last bouquet, it’s best to use a large flower or a thistle, under which you can easily hide the wire. Wrap the wire around your wreath three to four times, then cut it off, leaving an extra five centimeters. Now carefully turn your wreath over so that the unbound back side is facing you. Hide the excess wire under the loops from the previous wrapping. Carefully turn your wreath back over—et voilà—your masterpiece is complete.

How long does a flower wreath last?
Since we’ve already opted for a sustainable flower wreath design with our selection of flowers and plants, you can simply let your wreath dry. Find a spot for your wreath that isn’t exposed to too much direct sunlight; that way, it won’t become brittle as quickly, and you’ll be able to enjoy it for several years.
Tip: If your wreath gets dusty, you can refresh it by spraying it with a very fine mist of water from a distance of 30 cm.
