Abstract art is beautiful, intuitive, and simply a stunning eye-catcher. The possibilities are endless, so there are no limits to your creativity. Alcohol ink, in particular, makes this possible. The consistency of the ink allows for an easy painting process, ensuring that you’ll create unique works of art. But what exactly is alcohol ink? And what can you do with it? You’ll find out all that and much more here and in our Alcohol Ink workshops. Our painting classes help you get one step closer to your creativity while painting and show you what you need to keep in mind when working with Alcohol Ink.

What is Alcohol Ink?

Alcohol Ink literally translates to “alcohol ink.” These are highly pigmented alcohol-based inks. Working with alcohol ink is similar to using acrylic paints—it’s a fluid art painting technique. The alcohol evaporates very quickly, which means the paints dry fast. Unlike acrylic paints, however, alcohol inks can be reactivated, which is a major advantage. So if you touch the dried ink with fresh ink or pure alcohol, it reacts and can be worked with again. The beauty of this is that it opens up many painting techniques for your alcohol ink art. Alcohol ink art is therefore suitable for anyone who wants to express their creativity.

Difference Between Alcohol Ink and Acrylic Paints

Once dry, acrylic paints cannot be further worked on
Very fast drying time
Slower drying time

This means you can also modify your paintings at a later time. This means your artwork has the potential to constantly evolve—and you along with it.

Is alcohol ink safe to use?

If you want to work with alcohol ink, you should be able to ventilate your workspace. If that’s not possible, it’s important to wear a respirator mask with a filter. Because of the alcohol content, the ink pigments release fumes that you shouldn’t inhale.

Note: If you are pregnant, you should not work with Alcohol Ink.

What do you need for Alcohol Ink?

To create alcohol ink art, you’ll first need a few supplies to ensure your artwork turns out well. It’s best to get an alcohol ink set so you can get started right away. This set should include the following items:

Alcohol Inks

The best place to buy alcohol inks is online, because in Germany, Switzerland, and Austria, you can’t find alcohol ink colors in every art supply store. We especially recommend these brands:

  • Octopus: Offers about 60 shades, including metallic tones. This is probably the best-known manufacturer of alcohol inks, as they are also very high quality.
  • Tim Holtz Ranger: Here you can also purchase fairly affordable sets, especially if you’re just getting started in the world of alcohol inks.
  • Piñata by Jacquard: The same applies here as with Tim Holtz Ranger. Good quality, and you can get alcohol ink at a very reasonable price.
  • Sharpie Markers: As an even more affordable alternative, there are Sharpie marker refill bottles. You can use the refill ink in the same way as alcohol inks. They’re also great for adding embellishments to your artwork after the fact.

Blending Solution / Isopropyl Alcohol

To give your alcohol ink painting that extra special touch, it’s worth using a blending solution. The blending solution contains isopropyl alcohol and glycerin. This helps you lighten the colors and blend them together more effectively. Not only does this save you some alcohol ink, but it also allows you to create beautiful color transitions.

Alternatively, you can start by purchasing pure isopropyl alcohol with a 99.9% alcohol content in 1-liter bottles. The alcohol content should not be less than 90%, as too high a proportion of water and oil can negatively affect the image. That’s why you should make sure to get high-quality isopropyl alcohol to achieve beautiful color gradients.

A Suitable Surface

To create alcohol ink paintings, you should get a suitable surface. Unlike acrylic, watercolor, and oil paints, you cannot use regular paper with alcohol ink, as it is too porous and the ink will be absorbed directly into the paper. This prevents us from blending the colors and using various techniques. For this reason, we need a very smooth surface when working with alcohol ink. There are several suitable options:

  • Glass
  • Metal
  • Porcelain
  • Yupo paper.

Yupo paper is a synthetic paper made of polypropylene. This alcohol ink paper is tear- and water-resistant. However, it’s not the easiest to work with, as it creases quite easily. Additionally, the paper strongly repels oil, which is why we recommend wearing rubber gloves—this prevents skin oils from transferring to the paper. Furthermore, alcohol ink is quite difficult to remove, which is why working with gloves is essential.
Since purchasing these materials isn’t exactly cheap, an alcohol ink course where all materials are provided is a great way to get started with this abstract art form.

Another great thing about alcohol ink courses is that you can also give them as gifts to your loved ones. Everyone truly appreciates a gift voucher or time spent together.

Can you use alcohol ink on canvas?

That’s no problem. You can use alcohol ink on canvas. Just make sure to prime the canvas first. This ensures that the ink flows better and isn’t absorbed.
