About this class

Suminagashi literally means “flowing ink” and is one of Japan's oldest marble techniques.

In this course, you will learn this meditative painting technique, which uses ink to create fine, organic patterns on the water surface. Through gentle movements and conscious work, the flowing forms are then transferred onto paper.
A decelerating experience that creates space for mindfulness, chance and creative expression.

The course offers a smooth and intuitive introduction to the world of ink — without any pressure to perform.
Suitable for beginners, no previous experience is required.

What you’ll do in the class

In this course, you will learn the meditative painting technique of Suminagashi step by step. At the beginning, you will receive an introduction to the materials used: We will discuss different ink qualities, their properties and effects, get to know different types of paper and find out which types of brushes are particularly suitable for this technique.

I will then teach you the specific procedure of the technology — from gently applying ink to the water surface to consciously controlling the flowing movements. You will learn how to develop fine, organic patterns through gentle impulses and how to recognize the moment when the image is transferred onto the paper.

Another part of the course is dedicated to the drying phase and the possibilities of further processing the resulting work. During the entire course, you will have enough time to design several works, experiment and look at and discuss the results together.

Each resulting image is a unique combination of chance and conscious decision — irreproducible and created in the moment.
The course is a decelerating experience that creates space for mindfulness, peace and individual creative expression.
