About this class

In the mood for color and creativity? At the batik workshop in Frechen near Cologne, you can dye your own clothes in a completely natural way — completely individual and unique. With professional guidance, you will design T-shirts, bags or pillowcases in intense colors and patterns.

In batiking, we use wool to tie off a piece of cotton fabric, for example a T-shirt, a bag or a pillowcase. Where the tight band is located, no paint penetrates. This creates white and coloured areas. We play with colors: from light to dark, we color 2-3 layers of paint on top of each other so that mixed colors are created. We can also dye wet-on-wet, which creates a watercolor character. Depending on the bonding technique, circles, stars, dots or spirals can be created. Depending on how we apply the paint, marble-like structures can also be created.

We revel in a colorful palette of colors — the imagination has no limits!

What you’ll do in the class

We will search for plants together, including good old nettles, and carefully shred and mash the fibers. We then cook a broth on an open fire, which is the basis for our natural color soup. While preparing the broth, we will tie your T-shirt with threads using the traditional tie dye technique to create a unique pattern. We then dip it into the color soup to achieve the desired color effect.

Feel free to bring well-washed pieces of cotton. But we always have good cotton and linen fabrics on site that you can experiment with. The results can later be processed into book covers, bags or pictures.
