Why Is It Worth Making Your Own Lipstick?
When you make your own lipstick, you have full control over what goes into it. It invites you to experiment: pigments are blended until you land on a shade that feels just right. Every mix becomes a small lab of creativity, teaching patience, precision, and a bit of artistry.
Many store-bought products contain hard-to-pronounce chemicals, preservatives, and additives, not ideal for the delicate skin of your lips. When you make your own lipstick, you choose natural, skin-friendly ingredients like beeswax or candelilla wax. These nourish the lips while giving them a smooth texture and a light sheen.
What Do I Need to Make My Own Lipstick?
To mix up your own DIY lipstick, you just need a few natural ingredients and simple tools. These amounts are enough for about one to two small lipsticks:

- Spoon or glass stirring rod
- Water bath (pot + hot water)
- Empty lipstick tubes or small containers
- Pipette or filling aid
DIY Lipstick: Step-by-Step Guide to Your Own Creation
Want to make your own lipstick and looking for a simple guide? We'll show you how to create your very own shade using natural ingredients and a bit of creativity. Whether softly tinted, bold red, or with a hint of glitter, this lipstick recipe makes it possible.
1. Choose Your Lipstick Shade
First, think about the look you want: warm, cool, subtle, or bold? Test cosmetic pigments on your skin, combine different tones, and find your personal favorite.
2. Make the Lipstick Base
Melt the base ingredients over a water bath:
- 1 tsp beeswax (candelilla wax, if vegan)
- 1 tsp shea butter or cocoa butter
- 1 tsp castor oil or jojoba oil

This mixture forms the nourishing, creamy base for your homemade lipstick.
3. Mix the Lipstick Color
Add a small amount of the melted base to your chosen pigment and stir well. Test how the shade develops on paper or your skin. Adjust the ratio until you've found your ideal color.
4. Test on Your Lips
Using an applicator or cotton swab, test the color directly on your lips. It often looks a bit different there than on the back of your hand.
5. Shine & Scent for Your Lipstick (Optional)
If you like, you can now add a few drops of fragrance oil or create a light shimmer with mica powder. These small extras give your lipstick an especially personal touch.
6. Fill & Set the Lipstick
Pour the finished mixture into empty lipstick tubes or small molds. Let it cool and set for about 10–15 minutes.

7. Package Your Lipstick
Once the lipstick has set, carefully release it from the mold, smooth the surface if needed, and place it into the tube. Your homemade lipstick is ready.
