"People want more than a movie or dinner at a restaurant." Julian Meller and Marius Greb of Entkorkte Kunst experience this new creative culture firsthand through their painting classes with wine tastings.
These workshops offer people not just a creative break, but also space for connection, slowing down, and hands-on making with meaning.
That's shown by a recent analysis from the experience platform konfetti. Based on booking numbers, five-star reviews, and website traffic, the 30 most popular creative locations in Germany were identified. They range from urban pottery studios to DIY workshops, from paint-and-drink formats to florists.

Tufting, terrazzo, kintsugi - the DIY trends
What used to be dismissed as a craft class has today become an expression of a broader cultural shift: back to making things by hand. New workshop formats like tufting, where colorful rug designs are tufted by hand, or terrazzo, where vessels are cast with mosaic chips, are taking over the DIY scene. Old techniques are also resurfacing - like kintsugi. In this Japanese art form, broken pieces of ceramic are refined with gold and pieced back together.
Why people today would rather paint than go out to eat
"Between cultural offerings like a movie or a theater show, where you just sit back and take it in, people are looking for experiences where they can get creative themselves," says Marius Greb of Entkorkte Kunst, explaining the rising demand. "Our classes offer exactly that: a relaxed atmosphere with social connection, a creative process, and a good glass of wine."
At the same time, people don't always know what they're getting into at the start. Creative classes are primarily about the process of making, not the finished result. "At the beginning, we only offer randomized ideas for inspiration. We don't run classes where an artist paints a picture and participants copy it stroke by stroke," explains Julian Meller of the concept. In the end, everyone finds their own creative path.
More men should pick up a paintbrush
Creative classes are currently booked primarily by women. "A lot of men show up saying, 'I'm only here for the wine,' and then end up being the surprise of the evening," adds Julian with a smile. "They discover their talent, proudly present their piece at the end, and want to come right back next time."
