About this class

The drum workshop on the Beat Etage in Berlin offers the opportunity to discover djembe and dundun music and to experience the joy of West African rhythm. Each participant receives a drum and learns basic punching and percussion techniques as well as initial groove experiences. Structural rhythm exercises and solo phrases are practiced with the group in order to master the basics at the end and even be able to improvise. The course is designed for everyone, regardless of previous experience, and provides a collaborative experience for individuals, couples or groups. Drums are provided, professional guidance is included, and the workshop takes place at a drum school in Berlin Treptow.

Drums are provided during the drum course. You will receive professional guidance and learn how to play the drum. You'll also have a great time with like-minded people.

Location and accessibility

The course takes place at the Beat-Etage percussion studio in Berlin. Please inform yourself in advance about the exact entrance to the studio.

What you’ll do in the class

  • When you arrive at the drum school in Berlin, you will be warmly welcomed.
  • Each participant is provided with a drum.
  • We'll show you the basic percussion techniques: bass, tone, slap and batting techniques with sticks.
  • This usually creates initial groove experiences and develops a sense of what happens when different basic rhythms are played simultaneously in the group and how they intertwine rhythmically. In addition, initial improvisation experiences can be gained.
  • We're going to do some structural rhythm exercises.
  • In keeping with the rhythms that are practiced with the drum, entire solo phrases are practiced with the group.
  • By the end of the drum course, you should master the basics so that you can also learn to improvise with the drum if you are interested.
