I invite you into the wonderful world of goldsmithing – in a very special atmosphere. My rings are not made in a loud, sterile workshop, but right in my cozy living room in Berlin. Grab your favorite people, spend a wonderful, creative time together, chat, laugh, and head home at the end with a high-quality, handmade one-of-a-kind piece. Be a goldsmith for a day and experience how an idea becomes a lasting keepsake.

1. How do you forge a silver ring? A short guide to materials

Silver is a fascinating precious metal – soft enough to be shaped artfully, yet sturdy enough to stay with you for a lifetime. In my workshop, we work with genuine 925 sterling silver. That means 925 out of 1,000 parts are pure silver. The rest is copper, which makes the material harder and more durable. So you take home a truly valuable, long-lasting material. What makes silver special is its very own rhythm. As we work and hammer the silver, it gradually becomes hard and brittle. To keep it from cracking, we heat it with the flame in between until it glows bright red and “relaxes” again. Once it is soft again, it can be shaped beautifully once more. This interplay of powerful work and gentle heating is like a small, active meditation – you completely forget the everyday world around you.

2. Step by step: How to forge your silver ring

In my class at Cotton & Silver, I guide you step by step through the entire process. You do not need any prior experience – just a desire for real craftsmanship and a good time.

1. Preparation & measuring

First, we determine your ring size. Then we cut a suitable piece of silver wire. Silver wire comes in many different styles.

2. Bending & sawing

With a special jeweler's saw, you cut the silver to the exact length. Then we bend the wire into a ring with pliers. The ends have to fit together perfectly – this is where you first notice how wonderfully precise this craft is.

3. Soldering

Now it gets exciting! To keep the ring closed, we apply a little silver solder to the joint (the “solder seam”) and bring it to flow with the flame.

4. Shaping & hammering

Now the hammer comes into play. On the so-called ring mandrel (a conical steel rod), we hammer the ring perfectly round. This is also where you later decide on the look: Do you prefer the ring classic and smooth, or would you like to give it a rustic, lively hammered finish?

5. The finish

Finally, the ring is filed, sanded, and polished until it shines exactly the way you want.
