Class description

Calligraphy, derived from Greek, literally means “handwriting” and is the art of artfully designing letters. Contrary to what is often assumed, you don't have to have particularly beautiful handwriting to start with calligraphy. All you need is patience, practice, and time. It is a creative form of expression that makes it possible to bring old fonts and antique styles to life while being modern and versatile.

Calligraphy can be used in a variety of ways, whether it's to design custom posters, handmade greeting cards, or invitation letters where you can express your creativity. The artful execution makes every text something special that leaves an impression. In addition, calligraphy is also a calming, almost meditative activity. The repetitive movement of writing can help calm the mind and focus on the moment.

Getting started with calligraphy is relatively easy: All you need is a few basic tools, such as special calligraphy pens or brushes, suitable paper, and maybe an exercise book to help you learn the different writing styles. Digital tools, such as online tutorials or apps, can also help you practice.

How does this activity work?

In this workshop, you'll learn everything you need to get started with this hobby. But even if you've already done your first exercises, here you'll get the necessary tips and tricks to further develop yourself.

First, we select the font. This depends on the participants' interests and previous knowledge (Unziale, Textura Quadrata or Antiqua). I will then show how to draw the foundations. After the first steps, the letters can be practiced until complete words are finally created.

I will support you throughout the entire process with my many years of experience in maintaining and stroking. At the same time, you can try yourself out and find your own path.

At the end, everyone can create their own bookmark and take it home.

Who should definitely take part?

  • looking for a meditative activity
  • Enjoy designing with your hands
  • You have some time and patience
  • Are you enthusiastic about fantasy and the Middle Ages
  • Just want to try something new

There is only one eligibility requirement: You must be able to write by hand. No special previous experience is required.

Left-handed people are also very welcome. Please write to me in the registration form, as I have to prepare other materials depending on the number of materials.
