About this Tour
City tour through the overseas city of Bremen — Where history meets future
Experience a fascinating city tour with us through the overseas city of Bremen — one of the most exciting and dynamic districts in the Hanseatic city! This is where centuries old port history meets modern architecture, innovative urban planning and creative urban life. Join us on a journey through time from the historic port company to today's overseas city — a district that has changed like no other in Bremen in recent decades.
From port to modern urban district
Where you can now find impressive high-rise office buildings, stylish lofts, restaurants with views of the Weser and creative start-ups, the hearts of Bremen's port industry used to beat. The historic halls used to be piled up of general cargo from all over the world, cranes dominated the silhouette and the smell of faraway countries was in the air.
On our city tour through the overseas city, we will show you how one of the largest urban development projects in Europe emerged from the former port area. You will find out why Bremen decided to bring the port closer to the city at the end of the 19th century and how the famous Weser correction under hydraulic engineer Ludwig Franzius paved the way for modern shipping operations. In 1888, the first harbor basin was opened with the European port — then known as Freihafen I. Other basins followed in the following years, including the Bremen overseas port, which was the center of Bremen's trade turnover for decades.
A revolution in sheet metal: The container changed everything
In 1966, the first container ship from the USA docked in Bremen — and changed the port world forever. The inconspicuous, rectangular tin boxes revolutionized global goods transport and ensured that port activities increasingly shifted to Bremerhaven. As a result, Bremen lost its status as a central transshipment center — and the overseas port was finally completely filled in in 1998.
But the decline gave rise to a new vision: The “Überseestadt Masterplan” was launched and since then, a completely new piece of Bremen has been built on an area of around 300 hectares — modern, diverse, lively.
Discover hidden treasures and new perspectives
Today, you can discover impressive witnesses of the past in the overseas city — such as the restored Schuppen Eins, which used to store general cargo. Today, it houses a center for automotive culture and mobility. In addition, you will find modern residential buildings, innovative companies, art in public spaces and lots of little stories that are just waiting to be told.
Our city tour not only shows you the historical facts, but also the little secrets and anecdotes that make this district so special. What is still reminiscent of old port life today? Which visions have city planners and architects implemented — and what challenges are still there? You'll find out all this on our exciting tour.
Steps of the tour
Important note: For this tour, it is absolutely necessary that everyone is good on foot, as we sometimes run longer distances and there is no seating in between.
The meeting point for this tour is in front of the Feuerwache restaurant (in front of the main entrance, on the side where the parking lot is) and the end point is in front of Hotel John & Will on Überseeinsel. Both the meeting point and the end point are close to a public transport stop.
