Ethiopian Cooking Class in Berlin: Injera & Traditional Dish
Get to know Ethiopian Home Cooking
My name is Esky, and I was born and raised in Ethiopia. Food has always been an important part of my life and culture. I grew up surrounded by the traditions of Ethiopian home cooking, where preparing and sharing food is a way of bringing family, friends, and communities together.
After moving to Berlin, I realized how much I enjoyed introducing friends and guests to Ethiopian food and the traditions behind it. This inspired me to create the Ethiopian Home Cooking Experience.
My mission is to give guests an authentic and personal introduction to Ethiopian cuisine and hospitality. I want people to learn how to prepare Ethiopian dishes and to understand the spices, traditions, stories, and customs connected to the food. Most importantly, I want guests to experience the Ethiopian tradition of coming together and sharing a meal.
The cooking experience takes place in my home kitchen in Berlin, creating a warm, relaxed, and personal atmosphere. My home is decorated with Ethiopian elements and includes a traditional mesob, which we gather around to enjoy the meal together at the end of the cooking session.
The kitchen is equipped with everything we need for a hands-on cooking experience, including a traditional Ethiopian mitad for preparing injera. Aprons and all cooking equipment are provided.
To keep the experience personal, I host a maximum of 5 guests at my home.
For larger private groups and company events, I can also organize the experience at an external venue with a larger kitchen.
Ethiopian Home Cooking is more than a cooking class – it is an opportunity to experience Ethiopian food, culture, and hospitality in a personal setting.
Guests are welcomed with a traditional drink before we begin cooking together. I introduce the ingredients and spices commonly used in Ethiopian cuisine, and guests learn how traditional dishes such as Shiro, Misir Wot, Gomen, Tikil Gomen and other Ethiopian specialties are prepared.
One of the highlights is learning about injera, Ethiopia's traditional flatbread. I demonstrate how I prepare authentic injera using 100% teff flour and a traditional mitad.
The experience is hands-on, so everyone participates in preparing the meal. Afterwards, we sit together around the traditional mesob and enjoy everything we have cooked. Depending on the session, the experience can also include a traditional Ethiopian coffee ceremony.
Digital recipes are provided after the class so guests can recreate the dishes at home.
I offer both vegan and non-vegan experiences, and because the groups are small, the atmosphere is relaxed, friendly, and personal.
I offer private cooking experiences for birthdays, celebrations, groups of friends, families, and company team events.
Ethiopian cuisine is especially well suited to group experiences because cooking and eating together are an important part of Ethiopian culture. Rather than everyone preparing an individual meal, participants work together on different dishes and eventually bring everything together into one shared Ethiopian feast.
The experience encourages conversation, teamwork, and connection in a relaxed environment. At the end, everyone gathers around the mesob and shares the meal together in the traditional Ethiopian way.
