A picture is worth a thousand words, but what happens when you combine several images? You get a collage that tells a personal story and has its own unique aesthetic. Creating a collage yourself is easier than you think, and there are many creative ways to design one. In this article, you’ll learn how to create your own collage to present your ideas in a unique way.
What is a collage?
A collage is an artistic design technique in which various images and elements are arranged and affixed to a surface such as a canvas or paper. A collage is a type of artwork composed of a variety of components to create a holistic image. In the visual arts, the collage technique is used to create innovative and fascinating works. The layered arrangement creates a profound visual texture that offers the viewer a rich and often metaphorical visual experience.
In my case, as a paper collage artist, the collages are tactile rather than digital. A wide variety of paper pieces are glued together and also layered on top of one another in a collage. The papers in the collage should all touch one another.

Materials for Collages: What materials do I need to create a collage?
You can use a wide variety of materials in collage art. From silver-foil wrappers to magazine clippings or concert tickets, anything can be incorporated into a collage. The more personal the images and elements are, the more meaningful the collage will be in the end.
Overview of materials that can be used in a collage:
- Base for the collage: It’s best to use a canvas; paper or cardboard might warp.
- Various papers: Clippings from newspapers, packaging, and anything else that comes to mind.
- Pictures and photos: If you like, you can also include your own pictures and photos in the collage.
- Stickers: You can incorporate stickers into your collage, and tape can also be used.
- Glue: You’ll need paste to attach the materials.
- Scissors: To cut the images into the desired shape and size.
- Pens or markers: If you like, you can use pens to add captions and personal touches.

What kind of paper is suitable for collages?
Any kind of paper is suitable for collages: you can create collages using everything from magazines and packaging to concert tickets. Anything can be glued down and used for your paper collage. As a base for your collage, you should choose something sturdy that can “support” all the materials. A canvas, cardboard, or sturdy paper, for example, works well for this. It also depends entirely on how heavy the papers and materials are that you’re using for your collage.
What Makes a Good Collage?
As a collage artist, I’ve developed my own signature style over the past 14 years, which is reflected in my collages. In my collages, the central image sets the tone for the artwork. Then, paper and colors are selected and arranged harmoniously around the central image. To create a good collage, it’s important to achieve a sense of balance.
Note: In my collage workshop, I provide an introduction where I explain how layers, contrasts, textures, and the final touches of the collage work. Of course, I’m always there to support every single participant.
Creating an Art Collage: Tips for an Expressive Collage
- Choose a theme: A collage works best when it has a theme.
- Create contrasts: Use contrasts between colors, textures, and sizes to create a dynamic and interesting collage.
- Stay organized: Things can quickly get cluttered if you have a lot of images and elements in your collage. Try to stay organized by grouping your elements or using color coding.
- Use white space: Avoid overloading your paper collage by leaving room for white space.
- Get creative: Experiment with different techniques and elements to make your photo collage unique. Use unusual materials or combine images in unexpected ways.

How to Make Your Own Collage: A Step-by-Step Guide
Wondering how to create a collage? Here’s how, step by step:
- Determine the size of the collage: Choose a canvas or a sturdy surface in the format of your choice for your collage.
- Center of the collage: Find an image to serve as the focal point of the canvas and glue it in the center.
- Select images and papers: Arrange the papers and images for your collage so that they harmonize and complement each other.
- Arrange the images and papers: Arrange the cutouts and papers on your canvas as you would glue them down. For example, you can choose to mirror the materials on the sides of the collage and only vary the unique graphics in the center. This creates a very special design. Deliberately create contrasts in your collage.
- Gluing the collage: It’s especially important that you take enough time to carefully smooth the paper with your hands to remove any air bubbles that form underneath it.
- Layer by layer: Your picture collage can consist of several layers. Work your way forward layer by layer.
- Let the collage dry: For a unique final result, give your paper collage enough time to dry.

What makes a homemade collage so special?
When you create your own collage, there’s no right or wrong. By incorporating personal elements into your collage, you’re creating a work of art that will last a lifetime. You can enjoy it again and again. Then the thought occurs to you that you created the collage yourself, and that’s truly the best part. Designing a collage yourself is quite meditative. You work with your hands and calmly spread the paste. Focusing on the collage lets you forget what’s happening around you. You concentrate, carefully smooth out the air bubbles, and simply find yourself in the moment.
