About our watch workshops
As a trained watchmaker, I have been professionally involved with mechanical watches, their technology and their appraisal for many years. One particular focus has developed rather unexpectedly over time: the detection and assessment of counterfeit watches. You could say that I've seen more fake watches professionally than a watchmaker would actually like.
The workshops take place at the Diamant Agency in Oberursel near Frankfurt — not in a classic seminar room, but where jewelry, diamonds, precious metals and, of course, watches are part of everyday work. Many examples and stories therefore come directly from practice and from my many years of experience in the pawn business. And in fact, you don't always only get what's on the dial there.
Both workshops are deliberately held in small groups of a maximum of 4 participants. This leaves enough time to work, try things out, ask questions and, of course, talk shop.
At the “Recognizing Counterfeit Watches” workshop, I share my experience in this specific area as practically as possible. You get your hands on genuine counterfeits of various qualities — from simple daggers to astonishingly good plagiarism. With a 10x magnifying glass, we examine dials, cases, hands and look at clocks. You will find out which details a forgery reveals, how the quality of the plagiarism has changed over the years and why even a second look is not enough for some copies. In doing so, we examine the watches with the eye of a watchmaker.
The “Build Your Own Watch” workshop takes a completely different approach: This is about the watchmaking craft itself. You select various components for your watch and use them to assemble your own automatic mechanical watch step by step. In doing so, you will get to know the structure of a watch in a very practical way — from the movement to the dial and hands to the finished case. And you'll find that a second hand can require an astonishing amount of patience even though it barely weighs anything. You will then take the finished watch home with you.
By appointment, we also offer both workshops as a private or team event. Whether with friends, colleagues or as a corporate event — feel free to talk to us and we will see together what can be implemented.
