Painting candles – materials, techniques & creative ideas

Painting, decorating and designing candles isn’t just fun; it is a wonderful form of diy candle decoration that also creates beautiful, personalised gifts. Whether you want to try a new diy candle design yourself or simply decorate your candles a little, here you’ll find out what materials you need, which techniques are suitable, and get lots of candle decoration ideas.

Materials – What you need for candle painting

When decorating and painting candles, you should use materials that adhere to wax, are easy to work with and are non-toxic when burned. Choosing the right candle-painting materials is crucial to ensure your artwork lasts a long time.

Basic equipment for candle painting:

  • Candles
  • Candle painting pens (these are often included if you buy a beginner's candle painting set)
  • Water-based acrylic paints (only if specifically suitable for wax, as painting candles with acrylic paint requires the right formula so it doesn't flake off)
  • Paintbrushes, cotton buds (for details)

Wax decorations for candles are also a great way to create fine lines, ornaments or lettering. If you want to decorate candles with wax, you can find special wax sheets in many colours at craft shops.

Which paints stick to wax?

If you’re wondering what to use to paint candles, here’s the answer:

  • Candle crayons and wax paints: These are specially designed to adhere to wax.
  • Candle pens: Flowable paints that are perfect for writing or creating 3D effects.
  • Special acrylic paints for candles: Look for the label ‘suitable for candles’. Normal acrylic paint usually flakes off again.

Tip: Pens that are particularly suitable for painting on candles are handy if you want to create intricate patterns or lettering.

Candle painting guide – How to paint candles easily at home

Here is a guide for you on how to paint candles easily at home:

1. Prepare the candles:

Before you start, cover your work surface well so that no paint residue ends up on the table. Lay out all your materials: candle, candle painting pens, brush, water cup and, if desired, stencils or templates. Think about which design you’d like to create. If you wish, you can lightly sketch out your design with a pencil.

2. Transferring the design onto the candle

You can either paint freehand or use stencils to create intricate candle painting designs. When working with templates, it’s worth tracing the outlines first with a candle crayon or a fine brush. This gives you clear lines that you can colour in later.

3. Painting the candle

Now comes the creative part. Use candle crayons, candle pens or wax colours to colour in your design. Make sure to apply the colour evenly and let it dry thoroughly before applying a second coat. For more complex designs, you can also use wax decorations for candles to add three-dimensional accents or highlight lettering.

4. Dry and set the candle

Leave your candle to dry thoroughly, ideally for at least one to two hours. Avoid direct sunlight or heat sources so that the wax doesn’t melt. If you like, you can seal your design with a clear protective varnish (specifically for wax) to make it last longer.

Decorating candles – ideas for candle designs

There are countless ways to decorate or design your candles. Here are some ideas for different occasions:

  • Flowers and vines – for spring or birthdays
  • Stars and moons – ideal for the festive season or winter
  • Hearts and names – for weddings, christenings or Valentine’s Day
  • Crosses and doves – a classic choice for First Communion or Confirmation
  • Animals and symbols – for children’s birthdays or Easter

Festive designs are particularly popular at Christmas time. In our workshop, you’ll find lots of candle stencils or so-called ‘candle tattoos’ that you can transfer directly onto the candle. This turns every candle into a real eye-catcher.

Decorating candles with children – tips for you

Decorating candles with children is a wonderful creative activity, but safety and simplicity are paramount here:

  • Only use child-safe materials (e.g. wax crayons)
  • No hot tools (no hot wax or lighters)
  • Choose large, simple designs (e.g. hearts, suns, flowers)
  • Use old clothes & table protection

With children, candles can be designed in a playful and beautiful way using simple techniques.
