Steps of the tour

Meeting Point & Departure

The tour begins at Wien Mitte railway station (meeting time: 09:10 Apr–Oct / 09:40 Nov–Mar), where you will be greeted by your guide. After a short introduction, we board a comfortable train for a 30-minute journey south to the heart of the Vienna Woods and the famous Thermal Wine Region.

Summer Itinerary (April–October)

  • Scenic Vineyard & Forest Hike (9 km, moderate level)
Our summer experience kicks off with a hike through the lush forests and rolling vineyards of the Vienna Alps. Starting in the historic spa town of Baden, once a retreat for Beethoven, we explore its charming village center before heading into the surrounding forest trails.
After approximately 1.5 hours of gentle uphill walking (with plenty of stops for photos), we reach an elevated viewpoint with breathtaking panoramic views over the Vienna Basin and beyond. From here, we descend into the vineyards of Gumpoldskirchen, walking among the rows of vines that produce some of Austria’s most prestigious wines.
  • Traditional Lunch at a Heurige (Wine Tavern)
After the morning hike, we arrive at a traditional Austrian Heurige in Gumpoldskirchen, where you can enjoy an authentic farm-to-table meal (not included in the tour price). These family-run taverns serve locally-produced wine alongside delicious regional specialties.
  • Exclusive Wine Tasting & Q&A with a Local Winemaker
The highlight of the afternoon is a private tasting session at a local winery. Here, you will have the rare opportunity to taste a variety of indigenous and specialty wines unique to the Thermal Region, such as Zierfandler and Rotgipfler.
    This intimate experience includes:
    • A guided tasting of premium wines
    • A behind-the-scenes look at the winemaking process
    • A Q&A session with the winemaker to learn about viticulture, terroir, and the challenges of winemaking today
  • Return to Vienna
After a day filled with wine, nature, and culture, we take a short train ride back to Vienna, arriving in the city in the late afternoon, just in time for evening plans.

Winter Itinerary (November–March)

  • Discover Austria’s Winemaking History
Instead of hiking, our winter experience starts with a visit to one of Austria’s oldest wine-making institutions, founded in 1141. Here, you will explore the historical evolution of Austrian viticulture and how the monastic orders shaped the wine industry.
    This fascinating visit includes:
    • A tour of historic wine cellars
    • A guided tasting of premium Austrian wines
    • Insights into the past, present, and future of Austrian winemaking
  • Traditional Lunch at a Heurige
Following our historical deep dive, we take a short train ride to Gumpoldskirchen, where we enjoy lunch at a local Heurige (not included).
  • Exclusive Wine Tasting & Winemaker Q&A
In the afternoon, we meet one of the region’s top vintners for a private and extensive wine tasting session. This relaxed and intimate setting allows you to:
    • Taste a diverse range of wines, including rare local varietals
    • Engage in a Q&A session with the winemaker
    • Learn about modern winemaking techniques and regional terroir
  • Short Walk Through the Vineyards & Return to Vienna
Before heading back, we take a gentle 20-minute walk through the winter vineyards, giving you one last chance to soak in the beauty of the region. We then return to Vienna by train, arriving in the late afternoon.
