Class description

Welcome to the fifth season!
From 11/11 to Ash Wednesday, Cologne is a particularly colorful city. Join us as a Jeck and get to know and love Cologne during the most important season. We travel from the cathedral through the old town to Heumarkt. On our way, we'll show you traditional places and sights such as Willi Ostermann Platz, where it all began. A short stop at the brewery with a genuine Kölsch beer is of course not to be missed. Where does this Kölle Alaaf actually come from? And why do blue sparks always go on top? After our tour, you'll be ready for the Rose Monday procession at the latest!

How does this activity work?

Starting point: We meet right in front of the cathedral at the flagpoles at the main entrance, which is also known as the “Jecken Cathedral” during carnival. Here you can find out the first exciting stories about the origins of the fifth season and its special place in Cologne.

Old Town and Heumarkt: From there, we travel through the old town, past traditional squares and sights such as Willi-Ostermann-Platz, the historic heart of Cologne Carnival. We'll tell you where the carnival began and how it developed over the centuries.

Kölsch break in the brewery: Of course, a visit to a typical Cologne brewery is not to be missed! Here is a real Kölsch (exclusive) and we chat about the best carnival customs, Cologne music and the peculiarities of the jecken.

Carnival traditions: We continue towards Heumarkt, the center of carnival festivities. Along the way, you'll find out why the cry “Kölle Alaaf” is so important and what role the blue sparks or the triumvirate play in carnival.

Conclusion: At the end of the tour, you'll be well prepared for Cologne's Rose Monday procession and know how to really join in the carnival. With lots of new knowledge and the right dose of fun, we'll get you into the hustle and bustle!
