About this class
The clear lines, strong contrasts and exciting forms of modern architecture are ideal for expressive architectural photography. In our photo tour “Between sky, glass and concrete”, you will learn how to portray these elements in an atmospheric way.
The tour takes place in the late afternoon and ends about an hour before sunset. During this period, modern architecture is presented in a particularly clear light with precise shadows, strong lines and a sky that gives space to the picture — ideal conditions for capturing architecture in clear, detailed form.
There are two routes to choose from: One goes around Potsdamer Platz, the other through the area around Berlin Central Station, including Europacity and Spreebogen. Both offer plenty of opportunities for impressive architectural photos.
During the tour, I will not only show you exciting perspectives and subjects, but also explain the appropriate camera settings. I'll give you practical tips on image composition and conscious search for motifs.
This photo tour is not a frontal lesson, but a shared experience and an invitation to learn how to see again. Architecture is built time — and we take the time to record it worthily with calmness and respect for the subject as well as with a trained eye.
What you’ll do in the class
Route A - Urban Geometry and Modern Contrasts
This route takes you right into the heart of the capital, to Potsdamer Platz. Here, glass skyscrapers meet clean lines and modern architecture meets extensive squares. Powerful motifs full of structure and depth are created between steel, concrete and light reflections. The alternation between narrowness and width as well as height and area offers ideal conditions for using perspectives in a targeted manner and working with graphic elements. Playing with reflections and escape lines is also not neglected here.
Route B — Clear edges and new urban structures
This route starts at Berlin Central Station and first leads to Europacity. This area is young in terms of urban planning and architecturally exciting. Clear forms, grid facades and an interplay of light and shadow dominate here. The location is reduced, structured and urban. It is therefore ideal for sharpening the photographic eye for order in the image and working with perspective and focal length. The glass facades of the main train station, the Cube or the Futurium provide distinctive designs with a strong graphic effect and offer ideal conditions for architectural photography with a focus on perspective, symmetry and reflection. The combination of modern architecture, reflective surfaces and urban space creates strong, calm compositions with a sense of depth.
A particular charm of this tour lies in the contrast between massive construction and delicate details — perfect for working with lines and image composition.
Who is the class suitable for?
The three-hour tour is aimed at amateur photographers who are enthusiastic about modern architecture, want more than just snapshots and want to develop their skills — without burdening themselves with unnecessary technical baggage, but with a clear eye for the essentials.
