About this class

This creative workshop in Hamburg invites you to rediscover colors — not from a tube, but from leaves, flowers, roots and kitchen waste. You will learn how to dye fabrics with vegetable dyes in a mindful, environmentally friendly way.

We talk about the responsible use of plants and mineral additives, about coloring plants in gardens, kitchens and meadows, and about how to create colorful fabrics that are unique with simple means.

This leaves plenty of room for experimentation: Which fiber takes on which color? What happens when you combine methods, layer sounds, play with time and temperature?

You don't get a ready-made recipe, but knowledge that you can further develop based on your own ideas.

What you’ll do in the class

After a theoretical introduction to dyeing with natural materials, we experiment with various dyeing plants and their interplay with different fibers. We largely use seasonal plants and kitchen waste.

You'll learn simple shibori and tie dye techniques and I'll show you how to use the tie dye process to layer shades and create great effects.

Who is the class suitable for?

The course is aimed at anyone who is interested in textile techniques and sustainable design and likes to experiment, whether professionally or privately and with or without previous knowledge.

Regardless of whether you are simply curious and looking for initial insights or already have your own experience — the workshop offers space for exchange, inspiration and individual work.

If you have a particular focus, would like to gain theoretical knowledge for a university project, for example, or come from education and would like to use plant dyeing in class or therapy, I would be happy to advise you.
