Class description

The city tour through Bremen's old town offers city history and stories from the city in one. You will visit the market square with its historic buildings, the ornate Böttcherstraße, stroll along the Weser promenade where the historic harbor was located and finally reach the medieval Schnoor quarter.

The market square — Bremen's “good room” — is surrounded by historic buildings whose owners have shaped the fate of the city over the centuries. The Gothic Town Hall with its detailed Renaissance façade is a UNESCO World Heritage Site together with the Roland of Bremen. The Schütting with its Flanders gables is adorned with the motto of the Bremen merchants “BUTEN UN BINNEN — WAGEN UN WINNEN”. In addition, the modern architecture of the House of Bremen Citizenship, seat of parliament in the smallest German federal state, stands out.

Power games, the market and a murderer

Back then, the Bremen councilmen chose the location of City Hall and Roland with care. The councilmen thus put the Archbishop in his place. Find out also what the sharp knees of Roland from Bremen are all about (let me tell you this much: It's about selling goods on the market square) and the spitstone behind the cathedral.

Of course, you will also visit the Town Musicians of Bremen, the world-famous ambassadors of the city, who once made their way to the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen.

Caffeine-free coffee and a street as a total work of art

From the market square, head to Böttcherstraße. Where barrels and barrels were once handcrafted, coffee merchant Ludwig Roselius created a unique work of art in the heyday of the 1920s. Behind the facades full of symbolism lies a controversial story from a politically turbulent period. On Böttcherstraße, you will find the Paula Modersohn-Becker Museum, the first museum in the world dedicated to an artist.

Weser promenade and medieval alleys

From the Middle Ages to the 19th century, Bremen's main port was located on the Schlachte. Here, the ships were close together and brought the goods, which were stored in the packing houses. Today, part of the Schlachte is a popular and lively waterfront with restaurants, cafés and beer gardens where people are sociable. At Christmas time, the staged medieval village of “Schlachtezauber” there enchants. In the Schnoor quarter, you will finally roam the oldest quarter in the city with its narrow alleys and lined up tiny houses, where today artists and artisans display their goods and attract cafés and restaurants with culinary delights.
