Class description

Go on an exciting journey through the history of the former port and shipbuilding town of Vegesack. Vegesack is still a district that is characterized by shipbuilding. At the beginning of the 17th century, one of the first artificial river ports in Germany was built here. Later, rich Bremen merchants and citizens came to the north for “summer holidays” and had magnificent villas built on the high banks. Walking along the Museumshaven, Stadtgarten and Weserstraße, you will discover one of Bremen's most maritime districts and find out, among other things, why the donkey is said to have received his bread of mercy here from the Town Musicians of Bremen...

Much in Vegesack is still reminiscent of the shipbuilding tradition today. For example, the Alte Speicher, which was built around 1814 by shipyard founder Johann Lange. Museumshaven is home to interesting ships, such as the BV2 VEGESACK sailing logger, the FRANZIUS, a replica of a Weser barge or the experimental cruiser BREMEN (it is not guaranteed that these ships will also be in port at the time of the tour). On Utkiek, a bronze cast of a whale jaw is reminiscent of the time of Greenland drivers who set off from Vegesack to hunt whales. The city garden with its partly exotic trees dates back to the doctor and botanist Wilhelm Albrecht Roth and is now often used as a local recreation area. On Weserstraße, captain's houses and magnificent merchant villas bear witness to a time when shipping flourished in Vegesack. During the guided tour, you will also learn what provisions the sailors learned on their long journeys and why the founding of the German Society for Rescuing Castaways originated in Vegesack.
