Class description
Discover the art of kintsugi in a two-part workshop in Berlin. Learn how to repair and refine broken pottery and porcelain with gold or silver.
How does this activity work?
In this 2-part workshop, participants learn a modern version of the traditional “gold connection,” which is known as Kintsugi in Japan and was developed there.
The method used in this workshop was developed specifically for this purpose. Materials and procedures are not taught in this form anywhere else.
Day 1 - repair:
- Introduction to the history and origin of Kintsugi
- Explanation of the Wabi-Sabi concept
- Comparing traditional and modern methods
- Repairing shards with various adhesives
- Replacing missing areas with filling material
- Cleaning broken points and imperfections
The theory section deals with the history and origin of Kintsugi as well as the Wabi-Sabi concept. The difference between traditional and modern methods is explained and the materials of both methods are presented. In the practical part, shards are repaired with various adhesives, missing areas are replaced with filling material, and breaks and defects are cleaned.
Day 2 - Refining:
- Presentation of Urushi lacquer processing and Maki-e lacquer painting
- Comparing amber varnish as a substitute for urushi
- Application of Maki-e spreading technology on glued shards
- Cleaning and correcting the finished objects
In the theory section, the history and method of Urushi lacquer processing is presented and the origin and methodology of Maki-e lacquer painting as part of kintsugi finishing is explained. In the practical part, the traditional tools of Maki-e lacquer painting are presented and tried out. To finish the shards, amber lacquer is dyed with pigments using the traditional method, the resulting paint is applied to already glued shards and sprinkled with a selected metal pigment using the Maki-e spreading technique. Using objects that have already been finished, cleaning and correction are demonstrated right up to the finished piece.
Who should definitely take part?
The workshop is perfect for anyone who is interested in traditional Japanese art and enjoys creatively repairing and finishing ceramics and porcelain. No previous experience is required.
