Get to know PANKUKA
Hello! I'm Maria João, a Portuguese-born illustrator and designer who has lived in Berlin for the past decade. My work is deeply influenced by my experiences as a mother, drawing inspiration from the small, everyday moments that make life unique. Over the years, I’ve had the opportunity to work across various creative fields—from advertising and animation to textile design—and I’m always excited to explore new paths, materials, and techniques.
Journey into Printmaking
My journey into printmaking began when I decided to screen-print fabric with my designs. This curiosity led me to India, where I was awarded a financial grant from the Portuguese Orient Museum to study traditional block printing and tie-dye techniques with local artisans. This adventure expanded my creative practice and deepened my appreciation for the craftsmanship and cultural richness behind these techniques.
I enjoy blending my skills as an illustrator and designer in print projects, emphasising the creative process. Sustainability is important to me, so I always try to choose eco-friendly materials and ensure my work remains original and authentic to my identity.
About PANKUKA / Print Studio
The idea for Pankuka started when I became a mother - a home-based studio where I created printed textiles. Although it’s been on pause for some time, I’m now focused on reviving it and collaborating with others who want to learn and explore these manual techniques. I find immense joy in sharing the knowledge I’ve gained. For me, printing is more than a craft—it’s a meditative practice that helps me stay present in the moment, connect with different materials, and embrace the beauty of imperfections.
