About this Tour
The Wachau Valley, stretching for 33 kilometers between Melk and Krems, is one of the most stunning sections of the entire Danube River. With rolling hills, ancient castles, charming villages, and steeply terraced vineyards, this UNESCO World Heritage site is the perfect setting for an unforgettable kayaking adventure.
On this full-day tour, you’ll paddle through breathtaking landscapes, visit historical sites, and—if you choose—taste some of Austria’s finest wines. Whether you're an experienced kayaker or a beginner, this trip is designed to be enjoyable and accessible to all. Our expert guide will ensure you have a safe and enriching experience, sharing insights into the region’s history, culture, and winemaking traditions.
Steps of the tour
1. Pick-up from Your Hotel in Vienna or Wachau
Your experience begins with a comfortable hotel pick-up at around 8:00 AM in Vienna (or 9:00 AM if you are already staying in the Wachau). From there, we head to our kayak launch site near Melk, the western gateway to the valley and home to the world-famous Melk Abbey.
2. Kayak Introduction & Safety Briefing
Upon arrival at our starting point, you’ll receive a briefing from our experienced English-speaking guide. We’ll equip you with high-quality double touring kayaks, paddles, dry storage bags, and life vests. After a short introduction to kayaking techniques and safety guidelines, we’ll set off on the Danube.
3. Western Wachau: Castles, Forests & Apricot Orchards
The first stretch of our journey takes us through the western Wachau, an area known for its untouched nature and historic landmarks. Since the climate here is slightly cooler, vineyards are rare, and instead, the hills are covered in dense forests and apricot orchards.
As we paddle downstream, you’ll see ancient castles and charming villages perched along the riverbanks. This section of the Wachau is a true paradise for nature lovers, offering breathtaking views that can only be fully appreciated from the water.
4. Optional Wine Tasting in Spitz
Midway through the journey, we reach the charming wine village of Spitz. Here, the landscape transitions into Austria’s premier wine-growing region, where Riesling, Grüner Veltliner, and the unique Neuburger grape variety thrive.
For those interested, we’ll stop at a traditional, family-run winery for an optional wine tasting. You’ll have the chance to sample some of the best wines the Wachau has to offer while learning about local winemaking traditions from an expert.
5. Lunch Break in a Historic Village
After continuing downstream for a while, we’ll take a lunch break in a picturesque hamlet. You can explore the village, admire the historic architecture, and enjoy a meal in a cozy local restaurant. (Please note that lunch is not included in the tour price.)
6. Eastern Wachau: Terraced Vineyards & Dry Stone Walls
As we continue paddling eastward, the landscape transforms dramatically. This part of the Wachau is famous for its stunning, steeply terraced vineyards, separated by medieval dry stone walls. These terraces have been carefully cultivated for centuries, creating a truly unique and picturesque environment.
From the water, you’ll have a fantastic perspective of this remarkable scenery, with countless opportunities to take breathtaking photos.
7. Free Time in Dürnstein: The Jewel of the Wachau
Our last stop before heading back is the famous village of Dürnstein, often considered the highlight of the Wachau. This small town is known for its well-preserved medieval charm, vibrant blue church tower, and the ruins of Dürnstein Castle.
You’ll have free time to explore the village, wander through its cobbled streets, and—if you’re up for a short hike—climb to the castle ruins. From the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Danube and surrounding vineyards.
8. Return Journey to Vienna
After an unforgettable day on the water, we’ll drive back to Vienna, arriving at your hotel around 7:00 PM (depending on the group's pace and weather conditions). There’s no rush—our priority is to ensure you have a relaxed and enjoyable experience.
Who should take part in this tour?
