Steps of the tour
1. Meeting Point & Preparation
Your adventure begins at the Kaisermühlen VIC U-Bahn station (on the U1 red metro line). Your guide will greet you there, and from this point, it's just a 5-minute walk to the kayak launch site. Upon arrival, you will be provided with safety equipment, including life vests, waterproof bags, and phone cases. A short briefing will cover the basics of kayaking, safety instructions, and paddling techniques to ensure a smooth and enjoyable ride.
2. Kayaking on the Old Danube
Once on the water, you will start paddling through the picturesque Alte Donau (Old Danube), an area known for its tranquil atmosphere and scenic beauty. Unlike the main river, the Old Danube is a calm, enclosed waterway, making it ideal for relaxed kayaking.
Throughout the tour, you will witness the fascinating contrast between Vienna’s modern skyline and the charming lakeside cottages, some of which date back decades. The area is home to rowing teams, local fishermen, and diverse birdlife, creating a peaceful environment to enjoy nature.
Your guide will share interesting facts and anecdotes about Vienna’s history, culture, and architecture, making this tour not just an outdoor adventure, but also a learning experience. You’ll pass by some of Vienna’s most important landmarks, including the United Nations Headquarters (UNO City) and striking contemporary buildings, offering a fresh perspective on the city’s development.
3. Optional Breaks: Café Stop or Swimming
Depending on the weather and your preference, we can take a break at a lakeside café, where you can grab a refreshment and soak in the relaxed atmosphere. If you’re visiting between May and September, the water temperature is perfect for a swim, and we can stop at a floating pontoon or along the lakeshore for a refreshing dip.
4. Leisurely Paddle Back & End of Tour
After our break, we’ll continue paddling through some of the hidden waterways and quieter sections of the Old Danube, away from the main crowds. The tour ends as we return to the starting point, where you will receive complimentary photos taken during the tour as a keepsake of your experience.
From here, you are free to explore the surrounding area further. Your guide can offer insider tips on nearby attractions, such as Copa Beach, the Danube Tower, or the Danube Island, where you can continue your day by relaxing by the water or enjoying a meal with a view.
