About this class
By creating larger plates of approximately postcard size and building them into larger vessels, such as vases or houses, there are expanded options for designing in the soft material clay. The workpieces can be made larger (up to approx. 35 cm), and the volume can also be thought of and created larger. The motifs can have an architectural or geometric character; for example, the children create small kilns for the garden or balcony as a three-dimensional box shape. The small ovens can actually be used to (safely) light a fire under the supervision of parents. Cylindrical shapes result in vases, planters or abstract objects; wall objects are also possible. Plate technology can also initially be a basis in order to then work with roller technology in addition. In this way, a strict shape can be created as a core or basis, and soft and organic shapes surround the object with a floral character.
As a supplement to the roller technology taught in regular courses, plate technology offers the opportunity to think, shape and implement ideas in a more expansive way. We are getting bolder, other ideas are emerging, the fascination that the soft tone also forms stable structures is fascinating!
Techniques and dexterity are taught by experienced lecturer Clemens Junk. In the first step, color design is possible with different tone colors and the application of engobe colors (colors mixed on the basis of clay mixed colors). In the second step, glazing can be carried out after a drying and firing period of approx. 6 weeks — at a scheduled time.
