Class description

Discover the role of the Hohenzollern dynasty, the powerful rulers of Prussia, in driving Germany's colonial endeavors. This tour sheds light on how their quest for power and influence led to the establishment of colonies in Africa, Asia, and the Pacific. Understand how their legacy is intertwined with the very foundations of the Humboldt Forum, built within the reconstructed Berlin Palace, a former symbol of their reign.

The Humboldt Brothers

Explore the contributions of Wilhelm and Alexander von Humboldt, whose scientific expeditions and collections played a pivotal role in the colonial project. Learn how their work, while celebrated for its intellectual achievements, was also deeply rooted in the colonial mindset of the time, leading to the extraction and display of cultural artifacts from around the world. This tour challenges you to view their legacy through a critical lens, recognizing both their contributions to science and the ethical implications of their methods.

Restitution:

A key focus of our tour is the ongoing debate around restitution – the return of cultural artifacts taken during the colonial era. The Humboldt Forum houses many such objects, sparking important conversations about ownership, cultural heritage, and the responsibilities of modern museums. Our guides will lead you through these discussions, offering insights into the efforts to right historical wrongs and the complexities involved in returning these treasures to their rightful owners.

How does the course work?

We will spend the first half of the tour outside, while discussing the reconstruction of the Berlin Palace. It was reopened in 2021.

Then we will enter the Museum and visit the “Afrika” exhibition on the second floor.

Who should definitely take part?

The tour is for everyone over the age of 14yrs.
