About this class

The classic: painting in the open air!

Sensing natural lighting conditions and color changes and the need to simplify all perceptible sensory impressions are the best teachers that exist and invite you, as it were, to get into the holiday mood. Each trip takes you to a region that was once visited by famous Pleinair painters and immortalized in their works.

At least since the time of the Impressionists, so-called pleinair painting came into vogue, which can best be translated as “open-air painting.” Of course, the painters of earlier times also worked outdoors, but primarily to produce studies and designs, which they later used in studios as a basis for elaborate easel paintings. However, the artists of the early modern era elevated open-air painting to their own genre, as it primarily offered the opportunity to capture and reproduce natural lighting moods and weather phenomena.

The painting trips from the series “In the Footsteps of the Romantics” take us to an earlier era of landscape painting and to places that served as a source of inspiration for former painters such as Caspar David Friedrich, Carl Gustav Carus and Carl Blechen.

The locations are always chosen in such a way that they provide numerous motifs to approach the theme of landscape in all its facets:

  • the vast landscape
  • various close-ups of natural forms, e.g. gnarled roots, bark and leaf structures, tree studies, rock or water and water reflections
  • Architecture and architectural perspective
  • Play of light and shadow
  • outdoor color perspective

In addition to the almost unlimited choice of motifs, you have the opportunity to experiment with different materials and try out different techniques. Of course, trained artists are available around the clock to do their rounds from participant to participant, help you get started with the picture and provide valuable advice on the general approach and composition of the image, including compositional and design questions.

The special thing: Partners and families are also welcome to come along (not to paint with, of course, but to go on vacation there... painting along is of course also possible). The destinations are always chosen so that there are enough alternative programs for the rest of the family, from various tourist attractions to extensive sporting activities.

What you’ll do in the class

Monday: Day of arrival, meeting around 13:00; getting to know the area at an exposed location, briefing and initial painting studies on site.

For arrival and departure (not included in the price!) It may be possible to arrange a ride. The exact meeting point and information about possible ridesharing opportunities will be given to you after booking.

Tuesday to Thursday: Various positions along the famous painters' trail in Saxon Switzerland are selected and traveled to as far as possible. The painting sites can be reached by a short hike of up to one to two kilometers. The trails do not include via ferratas, but run over uneven, mountainous terrain. Two to three painting locations are visited per day. A lunch break and an optional coffee break are planned in between, and there are local inns and cafes in the immediate vicinity.

Friday: Departure day; There is another painting session near Pirna from around 10:00 to 13:00 and, if necessary, a joint get-together over food and drink.

Course times: daily approximately from 10:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.

Local trips are organized. From all painting locations, there are alternative sights and hiking trails nearby for longer tours, which can be chosen by relatives in such a way that joint breaks are still possible.

For arrival and departure (not included in the price!) It may be possible to arrange a ride.

Due to the current impassability of the Elbe bridges in Saxon Switzerland, we will start the daily tours from Pirna. The instructors also spend the night there. We recommend that you also find accommodation there so that we can start together in good time every day. Accommodation is not included in the price! The choice of accommodation is therefore up to you. However, we offer you the option of sharing accommodation with us. In keeping with the motto of the painting trip, the course instructors have reserved several rooms at the Romantic Hotel in Pirna - a fantastic hotel in the middle of the historic old town in a Renaissance building, stylishly furnished!

Information on insurance coverage

There are further instructions on this subject both after booking the course and before the start of the trip.
The painting school and course instructors are not tour operators or travel agents in the strict sense of the word. The offer presented here consists of open-air courses in nature. The painting school and course instructors are therefore only liable for the performance of this service at the painting location and at the respective time of painting - no one is forced to take on impassable or dangerous painting positions. All participants will also be notified of this once again on site.
The participants also travel both in the accommodation and at the corresponding painting locations as private holidaymakers. They are therefore insured for their personal statutory health, personal liability and accident, possibly household insurance.

Please check again whether you have all these insurance policies. If the open-air trip takes place abroad or near the border with foreign countries, appropriate international insurance is useful. A list of telephone numbers for EC or credit card or mobile blackout calls could also be considered (in general).

Here is an overview of all insurance policies:

  • health insurance
  • personal liability insurance
  • Accident insurance
  • Possible household insurance
  • International insurance
  • Travel cancellation insurance, if applicable

More detailed information on the process, travel, accommodation and insurance coverage is available on request. You will receive a detailed packing list after booking.
