About this class
Kintsugi: repairing with gold
(A bowl is included with the course - you don't need to bring anything)
Broken things don't have to be thrown away — they can be created anew, unique and even more beautiful than before. In this workshop, learn about the Japanese philosophy of kintsugi, in which fractures are refined with gold instead of hiding them.
From preparation to the final golden finish, we are with you every step of the way. In the end, you not only take home a repaired piece, but also a new perspective on the beauty of blemishes.
What is kintsugi?
Kintsugi (), in German “gold patch”, is a traditional Japanese repair technique for ceramics. Broken vessels are not thrown away, but the fractures are glued with a special varnish made of urushi tree resin and fine gold, silver or platinum dust.
The Kintsugi philosophy sees the broken and the repair not as a flaw, but as part of the history of the object. The resulting golden lines accentuate the fractures instead of hiding them, and because of its past, make the vessel unique and often even more valuable than before. It is a metaphor for the beauty of imperfection and the acceptance of mistakes.
What you’ll do in the class
After a short introduction to the philosophy of Kintsugi, we carefully smash one bowl at a time and put them back together piece by piece with gold lacquer. This really requires patience — the perfect mindfulness exercise.
Who is the class suitable for?
For anyone who has enough patience. You should only have one hand for fine motor work.
