About this class

The basic course in improvisational theatre teaches the basic principles and techniques that enable participants to be creative and express themselves through playing. An important focus is the acceptance of failure, inspired by Keith Johnstone's philosophy that mistakes are often the source of humor and innovation. Through various exercises, participants learn to develop spontaneous ideas, build confidently on the suggestions of others and to be present in the moment. The course not only promotes acting skills, but also confidence in one's own creativity and that of the group. In a supportive environment, participants discover how much fun it is to improvise together and explore new opportunities.

What you’ll do in the class

The course takes place from September 16 to November 11, every Tuesday from 19:00 to 21:00. During this time, participants dive into the world of improvisational theatre in order to learn the basic principles and develop their creativity.

A central motto of the course is: “The first thing to learn is how to fail and stay happy. And then we can teach other stuff.” (Keith Johnstone). An important rule in improv theatre is permission to fail — “Scheiter heiter!” Here, participants learn to explore topics and problems in a playful way in order to develop new ideas. Failure is simply part of it and can often create the moment that makes a scene funny.

During the course, participants learn when to stick to an idea and when it is better to let go of it in favor of a new idea. The course shows how fun it can be to make mistakes and how important it is to make others look good. It also promotes trust in joint creativity and a sense of support within the group.

Who is the class suitable for?

The course is suitable for all adults, regardless of their level of experience. Whether you've already taken your first steps in improvisational theatre or are completely new to the subject matter — everyone is welcome!
