Class description

The “Shinrin Yoku”/forest bathing practised in Japan since the eighties was devised to offer company employees an antidote to work stress, which had devastating effects on human health. The practice of counteracting this development through mindfulness and meditative exercises in nature is still supported by the state today in the Land of the Rising Sun and, since its introduction, has ensured healthier lifestyles and a much more vital population overall.

Waldbaden in Berlin is also about offering the frequently overworked city dwellers a balance to stressful everyday working life. Burnout is unfortunately on everyone's lips - but a herb has grown against it.

In addition, forest bathing not only has stress-reducing effects. Various scientific studies show that participants experience an improved mood due to increased production of happiness hormones. The immune system is strengthened by an intensified activation of killer cells in the body, which are stimulated by so-called phytoncides, organic compounds released by trees, which enable them to communicate with each other!

In addition, heart health is strengthened, the ability to concentrate increases, as the mind calms down, cognitive functions and sleep improve... and in addition, social connections are strengthened in forest bathing units, because the shared group experience in nature connects people on a deeper level.

How does this activity work?

We meet at the parking lot of the Three Oaks Center for Nature and Environmental Education in Buckow and answer very basic questions about entering the forest in order to step in as relaxed and free from fear as possible.

Since we start in the morning, we have coffee and tea from Waldcafé Drei Eichen before we head into the undergrowth.

The focus of my tours is on experiencing the healing effects of the natural forest, which are perceived with all senses. Mindful exercises and meditations are practiced and a lot of forest-specific knowledge is imparted, because experience has shown that recovery and relaxation can take place more efficiently the more we understand what is happening around us.

But this much mindfulness and wooded input also makes you hungry, of course! The Waldcafé team prepares excellent, Levantine food - typical of the Eastern Mediterranean region - also vegan by appointment. An afternoon dessert unit can also be integrated.

After refreshments, it's back to the trees, which fortunately are mostly intact in Buckow, as the Märkische Schweiz Nature Park is a protected landscape area.

Who should definitely take part?

The course is equally suitable for all people with a desire to relax and unwind. Techniques are taught to compensate for the effects of physical and mental overuse. I have personally experienced such consequences and still suffer from some of the consequences to this day. For me, forest bathing has become a path to (self) healing, so I practice it with dedication and passion.
