About this class
In this creative workshop, you will discover the fascinating world of acrylic painting with a focus on structure and three-dimensionality. Instead of just using the classic brush, you work with a variety of different spatulas and painting knives to create expressive surfaces and vivid textures on the canvas. The course will first introduce you to materials science, where you will learn how to use the various tools in a targeted manner — from applying large areas of paint with a wide spatula to fine, precise details.
Particular emphasis is placed on intuitive work: You learn to be guided by the moment and to experiment with color and form without pressure to perform. Under guidance, you will try out various techniques, such as wafer-thin glazes or particularly thick, plastic layers, and learn how to bring dynamism to your images through varying printing. Since the spatula technique often uses a lot of paint, the works of art sometimes take a little longer to dry. If your picture is still moist at the end of the course, that's no problem: You can simply store it in the studio and pick it up at a later date. The course is perfect for beginners without previous knowledge as well as for advanced learners.
What you’ll do in the class
0.Preparation (recommendation)
In order to shorten the discovery process on site, it is recommended that you choose an abstract image or motif that you like in advance. This allows you to start your project right away in the studio with inspiration.
1. Arrive & greet
First, you arrive at the studio in peace and quiet and look for a place. There is a short round of introductions in which we will see together whether you already have experience or are holding a spatula for the first time today.
2. Material and tool science
Before you start, I'll show you the different spatulas and painting knives. You will find out which effects are achieved with which shape and how the acrylic paint behaves when you layer or scratch it.
3. Demonstration & techniques
I'll briefly show you on a canvas how to pick up the paint, how much pressure you can apply and how to create exciting progressions by mixing directly on the canvas. Here you will also learn the difference between fine glazes and thick “impasto” structures.
4. The intuitive creative phase
That is the heart of the course. You choose your colors and start intuitively on your canvas. I'll support you in the background, give tips on how to structure your image or help you if you're stuck in one place. There is no “right” or “wrong” — the focus is on experimenting.
5. Finals & storage
Towards the end, we'll look at the results. Since the filled layers are often thick, we leave the painting in the studio so that it can dry in peace. We will then simply make an appointment for you to pick up your finished work of art.
Who is the class suitable for?
The course is suitable for anyone who likes color and structure — you don't need any previous knowledge!
