Class description
On sandstone, alabaster or soapstone, we work with hammer and chisel, rasp and file. The stone is easy for beginners to work with.
In my “Free Work on Stone” course, I would like to introduce participants to free work in stone and to strengthen and promote their own understanding of form through impulses.
It starts with a technical introduction to the tools. How to use a hammer and chisel is explained. And surface treatment, such as filing, grinding and polishing, is worked out together through brief explanation and trial and error on the stone.
In the further course, there will be a thematic introduction to the skuptural world of stone sculpture. Through smaller exercises on the stone and recurring joint consideration of the objects, I would like to accompany each person individually in their own work process and thus lead them to work freely. In addition, my course also offers working in soapstone. The soft rock is a good start into stone and offers many different facets; it can be worked with rasps, files, sandpaper. Handcuffs, pendants or free shapes can be made from the rock.
Participants are free to work with soapstone or alabaster. If you are interested, soapstone can also be taken as an introduction and another stone course with alabaster as a continuing course.
Wood carving is done with a saw, chisel and hammer. Dry pieces of linden wood, plane tree or cherry tree are available. The process of finding forms is accompanied and the “abrasive principle” is explained, craft and technology in wood are taught. The fine work can be done with a carving knife, sandpaper and a surface treatment with linseed oil.
Concrete and abstract work is possible.
How does this activity work?
First, we get a feel for the technology, then the focus will be on experiencing three-dimensionality. Loosely based on Michelangelo, the work of art is already in the stone, we just have to work it out! A sketch made in clay helps to find the shape in between. Abstract or concrete, free form or the implementation of an idea, I am at your side with all my know-how and experience on the stone (over 30 years).
Who should definitely take part?
The course is also suitable for beginners without previous knowledge
