Class description
In this course, you'll learn everything you need to design your own book. From the initial idea, through the development of illustration and text, to the finished printed copy.
How does this activity work?
At the beginning, you will be taught the basics of design. For example, the different types and uses of illustrations. An illustration can decorate, provoke, or tell stories. In what context does it relate to the text? We get to know different visual languages and styles.
Participants are invited to present their favorite illustrations and children's books, as well as their own illustrations, sketchbooks, work samples and text drafts for the first appointment. We will discuss your wishes and set goals.
And that's when it actually starts. Step by step, you will develop the basic framework for your book under expert guidance. You will outline a storyboard, find a style, color concept and design language, and develop characters.
You can work in any technique, such as pencils, colored pencils, watercolor, pastel chalk, acrylic paint, collage, linocut, or drypoint etching. Digital drawing (pixel or vector graphics) is also possible. You will be taught the basics of drawing, how to use the material or the drawing program as required. Bring your desired material, laptop and drawing pad.
At least at the end of each workshop day, a voluntary presentation and discussion of the interim results is planned. You learn to pay attention to the little things that matter in the end. Sometimes it's better to omit something, sometimes you should emphasize something in particular. And of course, it is important to design in an age-appropriate way. A virtual review of your illustrations between workshop dates is also possible on a case-by-case basis, if required.
Finally, you will learn how to turn your illustrations and text into a finished book. You will learn how to set images and text and all the basics necessary to create a printable file or an introduction to creating an e-book. If you have a laptop, you can complete the file directly in the workshop. You can now find a publisher for your book, have your book printed as a single copy, or self-publish it.
Who should definitely take part?
For beginners and advanced users who want to illustrate a children's book or graphic novel (possibly write it yourself) and have it printed or published.
