Get to know The Spice Workshop
I'm Patrick Hahnel, founder of Spice for Life, Spicebar and The Spice Workshop. My passion for spices didn't start at my desk, but while traveling — including Cambodia, Indonesia, Madagascar and Vietnam. There I met producers, discovered rare spices and got to know traditional blends that you won't find in any ordinary supermarket.
Spice for Life was born from this experience — a brand that provides high-quality, rare spices and genuine spice knowledge. But over time, I realized that knowledge alone is not enough. Almost everyone owns a spice cabinet, but hardly anyone really understands why certain spices work together. The Spice Workshop solves exactly this problem.
In order to make this idea tangible in space, I founded Spicebar — my own place where spices take center stage. My mission is to give people new access to a world they've actually known all their lives. The workshop does not focus on cooking, but on your own experience: smell, mix, compare, discuss. At the end, each participant takes home a mixture of spices they have developed themselves — and with it the motivation to cook with more pleasure again.
Location
My workshops are currently taking place at two locations in Berlin — other cities and locations will follow, as the concept is deliberately structured in such a way that it can be scaled by trained trainers.
The Spicebar
My own location, which I founded myself and which is completely tailored to the spice experience.

Das Pfeffer, Prenzlauer Berg
A second location in Prenzlauer Berg that offers additional space and a separate atmosphere for workshops.

For guidance on capacities: For public B2C workshops, the group size is up to 20 people (deliberately limited for atmospheric reasons), at corporate events up to 100 people are possible, with a graduation of around 15 participants per trainer.
Classes and events
My workshops are based on the Spice Method — a self-developed system that sees spices not as a loose collection but as coordinated roles: basic spices, team players and top notes, supported by an intuitive color system (blue, green, red, orange for special spices).
The supervised workshop takes place in three rounds, approximately 30 minutes each:
- Safety — the first mix is created according to a fixed recipe, everyone experiences immediate success.
- Understanding — the dominance model is introduced, participants recognize the structure behind spice mixtures.
- Freestyle — the creative phase: Everyone develops their own individual spice mix.
What makes my courses special: It's not about memorizing technical terms, but about understanding them through your own actions. No one leaves the workshop with just a recipe — everyone leaves with a system that they can continue to use independently at home. The same method is taught at both locations — Spicebar and Das Pfeffer — according to the same quality standard.
Team events and private events
Yes, I offer both supervised corporate events and open, free hands-on formats — from a small team event to an exhibition stand as a customer stopper, either in the Spicebar, at Pfeffer in Prenzlauer Berg or as an on-site event with you.
The special thing about my group events: It is not artificial team building with set tasks. The exchange happens by itself — participants smell each other, compare their mixes, exchange ideas. This creates real conversations instead of staged interaction.
For companies, every event is also an opportunity for discussion that has an effect beyond the day: Each participant takes away a self-developed, individual spice mix — a tangible, personal result instead of a quickly forgotten goodie bag.
