Class description

What to expect from Our Pottery Workshop: Sgraffito in Berlin?

Clara Holt, an Italian artist based in Milan, brings her expertise in ceramics decoration and illustration to our workshop. Her passion for classical literature, mythology, and surrealism influences her unique interpretation of subjects. Each piece crafted is a one-of-a-kind creation, adorned with drawings inspired by places, mythology, or childhood stories.

Workshop Flow:

The workshop caters to both beginners exploring ceramics for the first time and individuals already familiar with the craft, seeking to delve deeper into the sgraffito decoration technique.

  • Sgraffito Technique: Sgraffito involves applying a layer of slip (a mixture of clay, pigment, and water) to entirely cover the surface of the pottery. The potter then employs a sharp tool to scratch or carve through the slip, revealing the color of the clay body beneath. This results in a contrasting design, with the exposed clay forming the negative space. Sgraffito designs can range from simple lines and shapes to intricate patterns and images, showcasing its historical use across various cultures worldwide.
  • Practical Session: After an introductory theoretical segment and a demonstration, participants will have hands-on practice with this technique. They'll work on pre-prepared media available in the studio, including tiles and one tumbler for each participant.
  • Creative Exploration: To conclude, we'll explore the works of various artists, providing insights into a diverse range of creative ideas achievable with the practiced sgraffito technique.
