Class description

The Raku ceramic technique originated in Japan in the 16th century and is closely linked to the tea ceremony and the philosophy of Zen Buddhism. The original Raku shapes illustrate the principle of simplicity and naturalness, derived from love for nature. The particular way of dealing with sound focuses on chance. You learn not to want, but to listen, to feel what wants to grow out of your own hands. In the West, this firing process has become known primarily due to the formation of craquelure in the glaze.

What is the process?

  • On the first day (approx. 4 hours) you will form your own ceramic bowl
  • The course starts with a small theory unit
  • Then you can get creative
  • About a week later, we meet again to fire the screwed bowls
  • You glaze the dishes and then you bake them in the RAKU oven

After 25 years in the field of classical music management, I found my way to ceramics late on. My chance encounter with Ton and Raku in particular was decisive for the change of direction. I realized very soon that I had found what I had been looking for here.
