About this class
In this teacher training course, we combine Frank Schulz's art education theories with complex environmental education. Frank Schulz emphasizes that art not only depicts the visible, but also makes it visible and that learners act as research subjects (see Schulz, Institut für Kunstpädagogik Leipzig).
We use the FREI DAY learning format (“School on the Move” initiative), in which students work on future issues and implement specific projects in an artistic way. How is it possible to learn self-efficacy, creative problem-solving skills and taking responsibility through art lessons? In the course, we take the 7000 Oaks campaign by Joseph Beuys as an example of social sculpture: a work of art that has an ecological and collaborative effect and changed the cityscape over the years — with the claim to understand art as an active impetus for social change. With all this, we want to inspire teachers to see environmental education in a complex way and to help shape it: through art education interventions.
What you’ll do in the class
At the center of teacher training, best practice teaching ideas are outlined to implement art education projects with students in school practice.
Three days before the start of the course, all course participants receive information about FREI DAY as well as a brief theoretical art education input. Together, we carry out image analyses, photograph, sketch, observe, draw and collect as an artistic exploration. We design temporary works together and reflect on their educational significance.
Who is the class suitable for?
Experienced teachers as well as beginners who want to integrate art education methods into their lessons are invited.
The course is aimed at teachers of all types of schools, in particular subject teachers for art, ethics, German, general education, science subjects, who would like to work across subjects.
The training is particularly suitable for teachers who are interested in environmental and peace education, aesthetic research and participatory forms of learning (e.g. FREI DAY) and want to further develop their teaching as a creative space for social responsibility and ecological issues.
