Class description

The Hour of Power - solar lights against energy poverty

An exceptional team building event for social impact and sustainability at conferences and corporate events.

Extreme energy poverty affects 789 million people — that is around 10% of the total population. The effects are huge: from poorer educational opportunities to health risks and environmental pollution.

We will make that the theme of this unique team event.

What to expect at Social Impact Team Building Munich

Our approach is: Learn — Act — Help. We want to inform and inspire about energy poverty in developing countries and promote sustainable engagement. At the same time, we work together and build functional solar lights.

To this end, we work exclusively with SolarBuddy Live in the DACH region to create a better future for children.

Since 2016, SolarBuddy and its supporters have achieved impressive results:

  • 982,055 people were helped
  • 251,406 tons of CO2 were saved

Our Approach:

  • Learning: We want to raise awareness of extreme energy poverty and its devastating effects.
  • Act: Together, we can make a real difference by building solar lights.
  • Help: A light for a child in developing countries — step by step to reduce energy poverty.

Our team event:

  • Professional moderation: We will provide you with on-site support, provide you with important knowledge about energy poverty and help you build solar lights.
  • Our solar lights: Each participant has the opportunity to build a functional solar light. Teamwork is particularly important, because together we can achieve more.
  • Communication and engagement: After the solar lights are completed, each participant writes a letter, which is sent together with the solar light to a child in a developing country.

The backgrounds

Around one in 10 people on Earth lives in energy poverty. This means that they have no or only inadequate access to energy sources. Every night, children and their families are left in the dark without access to safe and reliable energy — a situation that has disastrous consequences for education, health, well-being and the common environment.

Our team event follows the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and combines an exciting program with a practical team activity — because we not only want to impart knowledge, but also to act. Together, we build solar lights, which are then distributed by NGOs to children in developing countries.

What are the effects of energy poverty?

  • Education: Energy poverty limits children's educational opportunities. Without electricity, it is difficult to study or do homework at night. In energy-poor regions, many schools lack electricity, which affects the quality of education.
  • Health risks: Indoor air pollution causes 4 million deaths a year: In regions without access to secure energy, people often rely on traditional but uncertain energy sources such as open fires or kerosene lamps. This often leads to respiratory diseases and other health problems.
  • Economic impact: People who live on less than €1 per day spend up to 40% of their income on kerosene lamps. In addition, the lack of reliable energy supply affects the economic development of countries and regions. Companies and industries cannot work efficiently, which hinders job creation and economic growth.
  • Environmental pollution: Kerosene-based lighting is harmful to the environment. It results in emissions of around 190 million tons of CO2 per year.
  • Equality: Women and girls are particularly affected by energy poverty. They are often responsible for collecting firewood and water, which limits their educational and employment opportunities.
