About this class
Berlin shows a different face at night: clearer, calmer, almost mysterious. It is precisely this special flair that we capture on our photo tour “When it gets dark in Berlin.” When the street lamps come on and the city becomes a stage of light and shadow, we set off with a camera and tripod — ready for impressive long exposures.
The three-hour tour starts just in time for sunset, giving you the opportunity to take your first pictures at the blue hour — that short, atmospheric time between day and night when the light is particularly soft and colorful. The perfect conditions for atmospheric city shots!
We photograph some of Berlin's most famous subjects, including the Brandenburg Gate, the Reichstag, Museum Island, Berlin Cathedral, Red Town Hall, the TV Tower, the Berlin Palace and Potsdamer Platz. You can choose between two different routes, which cover different routes and themes — ideal for experiencing the city from different angles.
During the entire tour, you will receive personal assistance with camera settings, assistance with choosing a subject and practical tips for image design, in particular when using artificial light, reflections and long exposure times.
Everything is explained in a practical and understandable way — without technical jargon, but with a high level of craftsmanship. The only important thing is that you bring a camera with manual settings and a tripod. Everything else — an eye for the subject, playing with light, the peace for the moment — we develop together along the way.
Whether you're experiencing Berlin for the first time or want to rediscover your hometown — this night-time photo tour gives you a very special view of the capital. Let's capture the beauty of the city together as it calms down and starts to glow.
What you’ll do in the class
Route A — From the Light of Modernity to the History of the Republic
Our starting point is Potsdamer Platz, where modern city light meets movement. This is where we start our tour with dynamic motifs: light trails from cars, reflections in the glass architecture and clear lines that result in exciting compositions.
We continue to the Brandenburg Gate, which unfolds its full splendor in the evening light. It is a classic motif that we present from different angles.
The route then passes the Reichstag and through the government district on the Spree. The waterfront provides an ideal backdrop for long exposures with water reflections, interesting architecture and atmospheric lighting situations.
The result is photographs of urban structures in the Friedrichstraße area. Here you have the option to freely design the image style: from graphically clear to atmospherically soft.
Route A offers many contrasts: history meets present, lines meet light, reflection meets movement — ideal for anyone who wants to explore the interplay of city and structure photographically.
Route B — Classic silhouettes and Berlin history in the evening light
Our starting point is Alexanderplatz, the vibrant heart of Berlin. We start with atmospheric pictures of the television tower, which becomes a glowing fixed point in the sky at dusk. An opportunity to use perspective and lines creatively.
From there, it's on to the Red Town Hall, whose distinctive architecture takes full effect at night. Here we practice targeted image composition with lighting accents and longer exposures.
Our journey continues to the newly built Berlin Palace, where the historic façade and modern surroundings intertwine in an exciting way. Right across the street is the impressive Berlin Cathedral, which offers a particularly photogenic motif in the dark: with reflections in the water, atmospheric lighting and plenty of space for creative compositions.
The end is Museum Island, an architectural gem. With its bridges, pillars and calm water areas, it offers ideal conditions for long exposures and atmospheric city views, especially at night.
Route B is aimed at anyone who wants to capture Berlin's cultural heart photographically, with a focus on classic motifs, historical backdrops and soft lighting. It is perfect for anyone looking for calm, expressive images with lots of depth and atmosphere.
