Form & Expression — Abstract Calligraphy as a Visual Language
Take a journey into the world of abstract calligraphy — beyond letters and meaning. In this two-part course, we explore writing as a visual body, as a rhythmic movement, and as an emotional form.
Writing is here an expression of pure feeling. Each line carries its own energy, each swing speaks in a silent language of forms. When we write without words, something profoundly sensual is created — a mindful dialogue between hand, surface and feeling.
In this process, thoughts find their way to the outside world, not through language but through movement. The result is a unique visual language that touches beyond what can be said — directly, vividly and personally.
What you’ll do in the class
Part 1:
At the beginning, we focus on materials and tools, try out different inks and pens and learn how to create different line characters. We explore materials and tools, try out different inks and nibs, and talk about the basics of image composition. First free exercises help you to consciously perceive lines and surfaces and to design them in a playful way. The course price includes a high-quality sketchbook and a pen set from Mont Marte, which will guide you through both course units. This is where your first free studies are created — your personal practice space for home.
Part 2 (after two weeks):
We meet again to take a loving, open look at the work you have created and share experiences. The works are discussed, questions answered and you receive individual impulses and exercises to further develop your own visual style. This is followed by a practical session in which you deepen what you have learned in new work — with individual inspiration and personal support.
Who is the class suitable for?
This course is aimed at beginners who want to experience calligraphy not as a writing exercise but as a visual, experimental form of expression. It is about composition, balance, and the sensory experience of line, movement and space — writing as painting, writing as a body.
